How will the course help you?

Give your learners' reading skills a boost by increasing your understanding of what effective readers do and how to develop these skills with engaging classroom activities.


What does the course include?

How to teach reading is a free self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: Understanding reading

This module will help you recognise features of texts, explore some key concepts relating to reading and identify strategies for developing reading skills.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

- identify what makes a good reader and how good readers read clarify why and how people read different texts
- produce activities, based on reading texts, that will allow learners to practise reading skills
- identify how different levels of meaning can be extracted from reading
- produce activities, based on reading texts, that will allow learners to practise reading skills.

Module 2: Understanding teaching reading

In this module you'll consider why learners read and how to identify their specific needs in relation to reading. You'll examine reading strategies and practical activities that allow learners to practise using them.

By the end of the first unit of this module, you’ll be able to:

- examine learner needs in relation to reading, and produce effective needs-analysis questions
- identify strategies to develop reading skills and activities that practise these strategies

Module 3: Engaging with reading – skills development

This module will help you recognise features of texts, explore some key concepts relating to reading and identify strategies for developing reading skills.

By the end of the first unit of this module, you’ll be able to:

- identify strategies for developing reading skills
- identify strategies to develop reading skills
- plan an effective reading skills lesson.


When is the course?

The free online modules will open in February 2025. The course will open for enrolment soon.


How much does the course cost?

The course is free.


How can you get a certificate?

For participants who successfully complete all tasks and achieve a score of 60% or above in the online exercises, there will be a downloadable certificate of completion at the end of the course.


What level of English do you need?

Minimum CEFR B1

I have completed my course ,after completing my certificate was shown. But unfortunately I didn't download it. Kindly guide me how can I get it.

Hi Rakshanda

You can find and download your certificate by logging on to the course platform (through "MY PORTFOLIO - My courses") and then clicking on the "My awards" tab. Your certificate is there for you to download.

Hello,
I had enrolled for the course (How to teach reading) but i wasn't able to go online to do it, is there a way to access it after end date or should i wait once it's up on the courses again?

I registered and started doing the tasks, but since 3 days I can't reach the modules. It gives me a note that the time and date is not accurate. I checked it and there is no problem in my phone
