Welcome to 'Teaching English to refugees and displaced learners'

How will the course help me?

Make your classroom a trauma-sensitive learning environment. Help your learners to shine by working creatively with limited resources and by managing challenging behaviour positively.

What does the course include?

Teaching English to refugees and displaced learners is a free self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will I learn?

Module 1: An introduction to trauma and its effects on the classroom

This module introduces the effects of trauma on learning and behaviour in the classroom. You'll also explore strategies for supporting learners' physical and emotional safety during lessons.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

- give a definition of trauma and list the main types of trauma which can affect learners in your classrooms
- recognise the effects of certain types of trauma on learning and behaviour in your classrooms
- create physical and emotional safety for these learners in your classroom through practical teaching strategies.

Module 2: Teaching with minimal resources

This module explores ways of using learners as a teaching resource, through creativity, personalisation and learner-generated resources.

By the end of the first unit of this module, you’ll be able to:

- identify the resources available in your classroom
- use a variety of activities when teaching with limited resources
- analyse the advantages and disadvantages of different activities
- adapt an activity for a particular teaching context
- you'll be able to be more resourceful when faced with a low-resource context.

Module 3: Dealing with very challenging behaviour

This module provides practical trauma-informed classroom strategies to manage distressed behaviour.

By the end of the first unit of this module, you’ll be able to:

- recognise that behaviour is a communication of need and that challenging behaviour can be viewed as distressed behaviour
- explain the links between trauma and some types of behaviour
- create physical and emotional safety for these learners in your classroom through practical teaching strategies
- implement some practical trauma-informed classroom strategies to manage distressed behaviour.

When is the course?

We hope to run the free online modules again in 2024 / 2025.

How much does the course cost?

The course is free.

How can I get a certificate?

For participants who successfully complete all tasks and achieve a score of 60% or above in the online exercises, there will be a downloadable certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Hello TeachingEnglishTeam,

I am currently experiencing difficulties accessing my courses through the My portfolio menu. The courses are not appearing.

Thank you.

Hi Daya11

I've just checked your account and can see that you are successfully enrolled in two of our courses. In theory you shouldn't have a problem accessing them. If you are being taken to your profile page when you click on "My courses", you need to log out of your TeachingEnglish account, clear the cache on your browser and then log back in again. This should resolve the issue.

Please let us know if you are still having problems.

Thanks,

Cath

Hi. I look forward to participating in this course. However, the various browsers I have (Firefox, Chrome, Bing) all report that "your" security certificate expired in the last day, and so they will not move forward to allow me to enrol. The automatically generated message they display reports that the problem may be on my end, or on yours (or in the middle, I suppose, with some clever hacker).
Could you please confirm that open.teachingenglish.org.uk has all its ducks in a row from the security perspective?
I haven't found a way to move forward and enrol yet, but at the same time I am not going to "weaken" the security settings I have.
Thank you very much, also for offering this course!

Getting the chance to be enrolled to such a course would be great for me, a Ukrainian teacher. Is it possible after the course started on June,6?

Hi Verochka

Enrolment is open until 26th June and the course ends on 3rd July - this is a self-access course so you are able to start it whenever you like during that period.

Hope that helps,
