Welcome to 'English in the multilingual classroom'


How will the course help you?

This course will introduce you to multilingualism and what it means. Learn how to make your classroom and teaching multilingual so that your learners can learn to celebrate and use many languages in the real world.


What does the course include?

English in the multilingual classroom is a self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: The benefits of multilingualism

This module will introduce you to what multilingualism is and explore what it means to you as a teacher in a multilingual class. 

Module 2: Multilingualism in practice

This module will help you develop an understanding of multilingualism in elementary education and the benefits of developing and promoting it.

Module 3: Developing multilingual learners

In this module, you will learn to integrate multilingualism within your classroom tasks and activities and plan your English lessons with a focus on integrating multilingualism.

Thanks for your comment. This course is not open for registration at the moment. All of our free courses are only available for a limited period, and this course has now ended. As you say, you can download and use the participant workbook still.

Hi, I have enrolled into this training program but have no access right now.

I cannot see my 'Awards' (certificates from previous course) or the 'Home' page.

When will it be fixed? It should be before the course expires.

I'm also having trouble accessing my courses page. I checked my courses section but I don't see it. I tried all the options that are written in the instructions for eliminating this problem several times, but nothing helps. Does not open my courses page.

It seems I can’t enroll even though the registration period is still open:” When is the course?
The free online modules are available now. Enrollment ends on 26 February 2024 and the course closes on 4 March 2024.”
When I click the Enrollment button I get : “File not found “

Thanks for your comment - the website is currently being updated so you may have some problems with accessing and enrolling on courses. This should be resolved in the next few hours, so please check back later.

How to change the name on the certificate.

Hi Syeda

To change the name on the certificate, you need to follow these instructions:

On the course platform where you access your training, please use the 'Help' button to request a new certificate. Names on certificates are taken from your personal details in your free TeachingEnglish account. To change your name, click or tap on your name to edit your profile. Update the details on your profile page and save the new details.

3. Log in.

4. Go to: https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/ExploreProgrammes find the course and select 'Enrol in activity' (if you don’t see the course here, don’t worry, just skip ahead to step 5). 

5. Go to https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/MyProgrammes, find your course and select 'Start course' 

6. Select the module you want to work on, go down the page and select 'Start task', then 'Start'.

If you have successfully completed the course, your certificate should appear on the course website, under "My awards". If you are having problems accessing it, please use the orange "Help" button on the bottom right of the screen to contact the course administrators.

I've just checked your profile and yes, you are enrolled in the course. To access the modules, make sure you are logged in to your TeachingEnglish account. You should see the "MY PORTFOLIO" tab in the top left of the screen. Click on that, and then on "My courses". This will take you to the course website, where you can access the course modules.
