What are the self-study modules in How to teach pronunciation?

Module 1 – Understanding pronunciation

This module gives an overview of pronunciation and how it links to the teaching of English.

Module 2 – Engaging with pronunciation – individual sounds

The aim of this module is for you to know how to prevent and correct individual sound problems that are relevant to your own context. You experience and evaluate a range of activities designed to practise problematic sounds.

Module 3 – Engaging with pronunciation – techniques and activities

The aim of this module is to help you understand how to integrate pronunciation practice in the classroom. The module looks at various aspects of pronunciation, including stress, intonation and features of connected speech. You experience and evaluate activities, and are given the opportunity to plan how to integrate pronunciation activities with other aspects of language learning.

Course reviews

What have other teachers said about how How to teach pronunciation helped them?

"One example is to include pronunciation activities in any lesson that I'm giving, which I've never done before. And I've found that this was a very easy way to teach pronunciation because it had a context and the students were motivated to learn sounds, intonations, and rhythm in a context they were familar with."

Course participant, Madagascar

"Instead of considering pronunciation as this impending and challenging lesson I have to teach every now and then, it is now a fun part of my everyday courses and is never absent during my planning. The activities I give my learners are now richer and more entertaining and thus they stick better in their memory."

Course participant, Tunisia

"During my day-to-day teaching, I applied the knowledge gained from the pronunciation course by incorporating focused practice sessions on stress and intonation patterns. For instance, I taught my students how word stress can change the meaning of words like record (noun) and record (verb). I also emphasized sentence-level intonation to help them sound more natural when asking questions or making statements. This not only improved their pronunciation but also boosted their confidence in speaking English."

I don't have nor use Facebook. Would I be at a disadvantage if I signed up for this?

Hi ztegwyn

Thanks for your comment. It's absolutely not essential to join our Facebook community - it's a place for you to interact with other course members and watch additional live events, but you can still complete the full course without joining.

Hope that's helpful,

Dear BritishCouncil!
Unfortunately, I can't enrol in activity because the button is not availiable. But the information on the course page says that it is availiable to enrol at the moment. What should I do?
Thank you for your kind cooperation.
Kind redards,
Natalia

Hi Yasmine77

Your certificate should appear on the course platform (under "My Portfolio - My courses) under the "My awards" tab when you successfully complete it. If you can't see it there, please send a message to the courses team directly using the orange "help" button. They should be able to resolve the issue.

Thanks,

Hello,
I couldn't find 'my portfolio' until I sent you e-mail from here and start my course.
Although the course ended, I would appreciate if you could let me restart the course to finish it due to the trouble.
I started the course, but cannot see the progress now since it has closed.

Hi Yumiko

I am sorry that you were not able to complete the course due to the technical problems with the site at the end of last week. In the meantime, you can download the free course workbook here: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/2023-08/Workbook_for_how_to_teach_pronunciation.pdf

I really enjoyed doing the course. It´s good if you want to revise your knowledge of pronunciation. What´s more you provide lots of useful tips and resources for free.
BUT it's really hard to access the course from the main webpage even when you are logged in. Everytime I wanted to continue with the modules I had to go back to the email you sent me and from there follow the blue link "the course site" and access the course. Apart from that everything was OK. Thanks a lot!!!!
