Understanding dialogues

This activity has audio recordings of two dialogues in different contexts: students talking together in a language school café; two people arranging a time to meet. You can follow the same procedure for both recordings. 

Preparation

• Download the transcripts and worksheet. Make copies if needed. 
• Download the audio recordings. Make copies if needed. 

Procedure

• Hand out or show the worksheet.
• Explain that learners will listen to a dialogue. Give the context (e.g. two students talking in a language school café). 
• Check that learners understand the True/False statements in the worksheet. Explain any unfamiliar vocabulary. 
• Play the relevant recording once, then give learners some time to decide if the statements are true or false. 
• Ask learners to check their answers in pairs.
• Play the recording again - as many times as needed.
• Hand out or show the transcript.
• Ask learners to read and check their answers against the transcript.
• Clarify the correct answers (Activity 1: F, T, T, F, T, F; Activity 2: T, F, T, F, F)

You can follow this up by putting your students in pairs to practise the conversations.
