Anna Whitcher and Kieran Donaghy: Image makers in the future of ELT

In November 2014, at The Image Conference in Córdoba, Spain, we presented a short video called A Visual Manifesto for Language Teaching. Following the success of the conference, we were asked by the British Council's TeachingEnglish website to write an article about the film. In this brief question and answer session, we will explain the ideas behind the creation of the film, how we went about making it, who and what was involved and where we see video and film going in the future of ELT.

Inside lives

This activity practices learners' listening and speaking skills. They first listen to a description of two images and then they analyse the language used and try to use it to describe some different pictures. The activity takes a similar format to that used in many speaking exams. The images used are those of Viennese migrants, all of whom run specialist businesses. The activity is based on themes and images from the OPENCities project.

Put yourself in the picture

This is a speaking task that encourages students to empathise with other people and try to understand them better. The activity uses a number of visuals of migrants and the students have to imagine they are the person in the picture. The activity is based on themes from the British Council OPENCities project.
