This workshop, with Nicky Hockly, provides an introduction to 'Digital literacies'. Nicky offers a useful insight to the different aspects of digital literacies and gives some practical tips for the classroom. The workshop was filmed at the British Council Young learner centre, Barcelona in December 2012. The workshop is divided into four parts. The second part, below, gives an overview of the different kinds of digital literacies.

In this talk, Nicky looks at the importance of digital literacies and the need for training to be given to teachers in this area.

When I grew up and went to school in the seventies and eighties, discussions of literacy and numeracy were limited to what we used to call the ‘three Rs’ (reading, (w)riting and (a)rithmetic), but times have changed, and the notion of 'literacy’ in the wired world of 2014 is a completely different beast.  

Although you will often see twenty-first century skills and digital literacy referred to as one and the same thing in much of the literature, there is a considerable difference between the two. 

In most UK schools, new media literacy skills now supplement the more traditional 3 Rs (reading, writing and 'rithmatic).
