The revision box

This activity can be used for all levels in teaching English as a second language. I use it mainly for intermediate students and they find it interesting.

Eavesdropping

This is an activity for students to practise reporting speech. It provides a situation for reporting what others have said that can be more realistic than some of the exercises that are found in textbooks, and great fun!

Classroom issues

Learners have a lot of ideas about how they should learn a language and it is important to encourage them to discuss these and to communicate them to the teacher.

Childhood stories

This series of activities enables students to practise what are traditionally called 'language skills' (reading, writing, etc.) in the context of their own lives and learn more about each other in the process.

Action Research - Stop, Start, Continue

This is an idea I got from a workshop that I went to many years ago. I have used it many times since and found it to be a really useful way of getting feedback from my students on my lessons and my teaching.

The spending maze

This is an integrated reading and speaking activity for intermediate (or higher) level students. They make decisions in pairs or groups with the aim of spending one million euros.

Jigsaw reading

This is an approach to reading that involves the students in speaking and summarising skills. It is very useful when working with short authentic texts such as newspaper articles.

Telephone role plays

Speaking English on the telephone is difficult for learners for many reasons and even high-level students often feel uncomfortable with the unpredictability of telephone conversations.
