Context-responsive English teacher education: Video-based training for primary classrooms

Developed through the Widening Participation: English as a School Subject research project carried out in Bangladesh, Malawi, Mexico and Uzbekistan, the materials respond to the real-world challenges faced by teachers in diverse, low-resourced contexts.

The training units are grounded in the principle of context-appropriate pedagogy, recognising that effective English teaching must reflect the realities of learners, classrooms, and communities. Each unit features authentic classroom footage, showcasing strategies and techniques used by teachers navigating large class sizes, limited resources, and varied learner needs.

With flexible modules, including Starting the Lesson, Translanguaging and Teaching Large Classes, the materials support critical reflection, practical skill-building, and inclusive teaching practices. Loop input activities encourage trainees to experience methods they can apply in their own classrooms.

Designed for adaptability, the units can be used before or after teaching practice and are suitable for mixed-experience groups. Trainer notes and participant handouts are included, and the use of both English and home languages is encouraged to foster deeper engagement.
