Foreign and second language teaching in the USSR

This brief report was written following a fact-finding visit to the Soviet Union in 1962 by a delegation of British education specialists. The visit took place during a determined, centralised drive to improve language teaching.

National syllabuses

Dating from 1980, this book was written in response to a major study by the International Evaluation Association of achievement by education syllabuses worldwide in six key school subjects, including English.

The teaching of listening comprehension

This 1981 volume, a collection of papers from a colloquium organised in Paris two years earlier, provides various practical insights into the development of listening skills.

ELT Guide-2: Simulations

This 1979 'teaching aid devised by the English Language Teaching Institute' was authored by David Herbert and Gill Sturtridge. 'Simulations' are defined and various types are described, including role plays. The value of using simulations is discussed, as are the stages involved in their production, and their structure.

ESP in the classroom: Practice and evaluation

The papers in this 1988 volume emerged from the International Conference on English for Specific Purposes, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 1–5 April 1985. An overall conference theme was how to create links between English teaching and the world of work.
