Communicative language learning and the microcomputer

This 1987 publication by Martin Phillips focuses on early ideas about the use of computers in language learning.

Teenage boy using a computer

The book consists of three chapters, moving from general principles of language learning to specific examples from the British Council Software Series available at the time.

Chapter One explores what computers can offer those wishing to learn a language. Chapter Two examines the role of authentic and enabling tasks as central to a pedagogical approach to Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Chapter Three discusses how, through a task-based pedagogical approach, the British Council programs used games, problem-solving exercises, adventures, text-based activities, and simulations to support language learning.
