Teaching and learning English in Jordan: People, policy and practice

Abstract

Conducted by the Queen Rania Teacher Academy and supported by the British Council, the study highlights the current state of English teaching in schools and universities, and how it aligns with labour market needs.

The research focuses on three key areas: people, policy, and practice. It shows that while efforts have been made to improve English education, many challenges remain. Teachers often lack modern training, and students are not always motivated to learn English. Employers say that graduates often do not have the English skills needed for the workplace, especially in speaking and writing.

The report recommends improving teacher training, updating the curriculum, and using more interactive teaching methods. It also suggests stronger links between education institutions and the private sector to ensure students gain the English skills needed for real jobs.

This study is important for educators, policymakers, and employers who want to improve English language outcomes in Jordan. It also supports the goals of the Human Resource Development Strategy 2016–2025, which aims to prepare youth for the future.

By aligning English education with labour market needs, Jordan can help its young people succeed in a global economy. This report offers practical steps to make that happen.
