Understanding teacher learning is one of the professional practices in the British Council's teacher educator framework. It involves having an understanding of the competences teachers need to be effective practitioners, as well as having an understanding of theories of adult and professional learning and behavioural change. It includes knowing about the processes involved in professional learning, such as collaboration, reflection and inquiry and how teacher attitudes, beliefs and motivations affect their professional learning. Being aware of the barriers to effective professional learning and how to overcome these is also an important aspect of this practice.
