About this event

Multilingual classrooms are increasingly common across educational contexts worldwide. However, many teachers receive limited preparation for supporting linguistically diverse learners or for developing inclusive multilingual pedagogy in practice. This webinar brings together two British Council-funded research projects from Vietnam and Nepal that explore how teacher educators and teachers of English can support multilingualism and equitable education within their local communities.

The session will examine how collaborative professional development models, including Teacher Activity Groups (TAGs), translanguaging pedagogy and teacher leadership initiatives, can support teachers in responding to the needs of multilingual learners. Drawing on participatory and practice-based research, the presenters will share how English language teachers worked alongside colleagues and local teacher educators to develop more inclusive teaching approaches and strengthen professional learning communities.

The interactive session will introduce participants to research-informed frameworks, pedagogical resources and collaborative development strategies that can be adapted for use in different teacher education and professional development contexts.

About the speakers

Dr Melike Bulut Al Baba is a senior lecturer in TESOL and Teacher Education at Sheffield Hallam University. Her research and professional interests include language teacher education, teacher learning, teacher research and multilingual education. She leads the External Interdisciplinary Network on Multilingualism, supervises postgraduate research and contributes to international research and consultancy projects.

Dr Thi Phuong Dung Cao is a lecturer in the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University-HCMC. She holds a PhD in English Linguistics from the University of Leeds. Her research interests include multilingualism, vocabulary learning and teaching, corpus linguistics and English language teaching, and she has published widely in international journals.

Dr Tae-Hee Choi is associate professor of Education and Director of Internationalisation at the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on multilingual education, language policy, teacher development and educational change, with particular attention to equity and inclusion. She has led internationally funded projects and recently co-led award-winning research on multilingual pedagogies in Nepal.

Dr Prem Prasad Poudel is an assistant professor at Tribhuvan University, with over 20 years of experience in teacher education and applied linguistics. His research focuses on language policy, multilingualism, language revitalisation and teacher education. He has led major national research projects in Nepal and collaborated with organisations including UNICEF, the British Council, and the University of Southampton.
