What is this webinar about?
How to prepare student teachers and support them in their first few years in school is a fundamental consideration for education systems around the world. In this webinar we discuss how this is approached in England. Will Grant, Programme Lead for the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Secondary) at the University of West England, provides an overview of the different routes into teaching in the state system and the typical focus, content and aims of preservice education in England. He discusses, through reference to a specific example, how his institution approaches the development of professional exchange, collegiality and well-being amongst teachers-in-training at this critical stage of their careers. Through this overview and case study Will highlights some of the general challenges facing teacher education in England – challenges shared by many countries across the world in their desire to prepare, support and retain teachers effectively.

About the speaker
Will Grant is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and leads the Secondary phase PGCE programme. He has a personal background in the visual arts, teaching this discipline in a variety of English educational contexts before joining UWE's School of Education and Childhood. His research interests include initial teacher education (ITE), arts pedagogies, education and social justice, and curriculum design.

They take place in Zoom Events. You do not need any special equipment to watch the webinars apart from a computer with the audio on. Registration is for the full event - you do not need to attend every session.

- a link to join
- a passcode that you will need to enter to join the webinar
- any other relevant information

Instructions for joining a session in the event
- Click on the link that was emailed to you when you registered for the event.
- Enter the email address that you used to register for the event.
- If requested, introduce the passcode that was emailed to you when you registered for the event.
- You will join the 'lobby'. From the lobby you can chat to other participants.
- From the lobby you will see the session that is either currently live or soon to be live. When a session is live, you can click 'join' to watch the live session.
