The secret of working with children - Carol Read

In February 2012, Carol Read gave a workshop at the British Council in Warsaw. Her talk covered a range of primary issues, and she gave a number of invaluable tips about teaching primary students.

You can watch her talk, titled 'The secret of working with children', in full in the video below:

In 'The secret of working with children', Carol details the SECRET teaching model, highlighting the importance of each aspect individually: Sensory acuity, Emotion, Communication, Rapport, Evaluation and Talk.

Sensory acuity focuses on using multisensory information to help understand and react to learners' needs. This could be hand gestures, tone of voice and facial expressions.

Emotion encourages teachers to consider different perspectives to promote empathy and manage classrooms more effectively.

Communication highlights the importance of providing meaningful, qualitative feedback as well as looking at what our body language says.

Rapport encourages the build of strong, respectful relationships between teachers and students.

Evaluation encourages teachers to regularly self-assess their own teaching methods to help them continually improve and adapt.

Talking offers more choices to learners to support their autonomy and engagement within the classroom environment.

However, the main takeaway from this session is that the real secret lies within teachers themselves and their own unique way of being reflective, empathetic and adaptive.

Thanks! I think we all have to personalize our teaching-learning process. Every class is different and every teacher has a way of teaching.
