Freeze! Making writing tasks more collaborative

This collaborative writing activity encourages learners to work together to generate ideas and carry out peer correction to produce a coherent and cohesive written text.

This activity can follow input work on writing in a particular style, for example, an informal email inviting a friend to visit your hometown for a holiday.

Set up the context for the email by doing a quick brainstorm of what information would need to be included. If you feel your learners need more support you could write their suggestions on the board using a mind map. They may offer ideas such as:

  • name of friend / name of hometown
  • possible dates for visit
  • places to visit
  • things to see and do
  • what to bring

Procedure

  • Put your learners into pairs or small groups of three.
  • Give each pair/group a large piece of paper and ask them to write the opening greeting of the email (Dear Sam, / Hi Sam,) and then stop.
  • Then tell them that they are going to write the main content of the email. But, as soon as they hear you say Freeze!  they have to stop writing, even if they’re in the middle of a sentence.
  • The learners begin to write their first sentence. Check that everyone has written something before you say Freeze! for the first time.
  • After saying Freeze!, transfer each paper to the next group so that everyone’s working with another text.
  • Tell learners to read, correct, improve and continue. In this way, they work on the text that they have received and then they continue writing that email until you say Freeze! again.
  • Repeat the procedure, transferring the papers to the next group so that the learners are working with a different text each time. Monitor the groups to make sure they are reading and correcting the email before continuing it.
  • Continue the procedure until the papers come back to the original group and this time instruct learners to close the email so that they finish the same text that they started.
  • For homework, they could each write a final draft of their corrected email.

This is a fantastic way to vary classroom activities and make writing more engaging.
I will definitely use it with my students!

This activity will do fun I know my students will like it

Very helpful. Definitely will use

It is interesting, but some English learners do not have enough vocabulary to write an informal email. What should they do if they still think in Spanish?

Dear Luis,
Thanks for your question and interest in this topic.
This activity may not work in all contexts and you may feel that it is not appropriate for your learners. Writing is a complex skill and as you say, learners may not have the vocabulary and language they need. It's helpful to give learners time to prepare before writing, for example, by looking at example informal emails, highlighting typical phrases and language from emails, and preparing suitable vocabulary before they write. It might also help if learners work in pairs or small groups so they can help each other.

Im very excited to try it

OH, I am going to introduce this activity to my class for sure. Thanking for introducing this activity to us as well.

Seems really fun and would love to incorporate this in the classroom.

I like this activity so much and use for my lessons.

But I teach online... I wonder how I might be able to adapt this to an online setting.

I will use this. Thank you.

Great one

I have never heard about this way of teaching. I will try it our in my next writing class.

I'll try it for my class and i like this way.

I’m going to try it and leave a review

Fruitful techniques

I like this activity so much, I am going to use it.

I can't wait till I try this technique with my students .

I like this idea.

It’s really interseting. The learners can read, edit, add and write to improve their writing. I am going to introduce this activity with my students.

 Thanks.
