What are the self-study modules?

Module 1 Methods and approaches for grammar

The aim of this module is to introduce you to a range of ELT approaches for teaching grammar. You'll begin with a brief history of approaches and a look at deductive and inductive approaches to learning. You will summarise ELT approaches, outline their benefits and drawbacks as well as identify and explain inductive and deductive approaches to presenting grammar.

Module 2 Engaging with grammar noticing and restructuring

The aim of this module is to explore the concept of noticing and look at various activities to encourage your learners to notice grammatical forms. You will identify what's involved in noticing, modify typical coursebook grammar exercises to provide practice in developing noticing skills as well as design restructuring activities.

Module 3  Engaging with grammar different approaches

The aim of this module is to look at a range of techniques for introducing grammar that focus on meaning. You will summarise and evaluate a range of activities for introducing grammar, provide personalised grammar practice for your learners as well as plan the presentation stage of a grammar lesson using an inductive approach.

Course reviews

What have other teachers said about how How to teach grammar helped them?

"One example of how I applied the knowledge and skills is by shifting from isolated grammar drills to using grammar in meaningful contexts. for instance, I recently taught the past tense (simple past) by having students write personal narratives about their weekend. instead of focusing only on rules, I guided them to identify and correct tense usage within their own writing. well, this made the grammar more relevant and helped students understand how it functions in real communication."

Course participant, Indonesia

"Now I am trying to teach grammar more inductively in my classes. I am avoiding explanations and giving my students more correct examples so they can discover the rules by themselves."

Course participant, Dominican Republic

"After taking this course, I started using more interactive methods to teach grammar. For example, instead of just explaining the rules of tenses, I now use real-life situations, role-plays, and sentence-building games. This has helped my students understand and apply grammar concepts more effectively and confidently in their speaking and writing."

Hello,
Hope this message finds you well
I've two questions I'd like to ask:

1. Unfortunately I wasn't able to complete this wonderful and beneficial course in time. I know from the schedule given for the courses of 2024-25 that this course may not reopen very soon, however I'd like to know if there's an estimated date for when it will reopen.

2. Since I've already finished module one and 2/3rds of module two, will this progress be saved for me when it reopens?

Thank you in advance and have a delightful day/afternoon/evening/night ahead ^_^

Hi MKA2627

Thanks for your message.

We don't currently have a definite date for when the Teaching Grammar course will open again I'm afraid, and your course progress won't be saved unfortunately.

However, you can still download the participant workbook for this course, which has resources and links for you to continue your learning. Here's the link: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/2024-01/Workbook_for_how_to_teach_grammar.pdf

Remember you can also sign up for our TeachingEnglish newsletter to keep up to date on course dates, new resources and events.

Dear Support Team,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention an issue I have been experiencing with accessing my training courses on your platform.
Upon logging into my account, I am unable to access the training courses that I have enrolled in. Despite logging in, the system does not grant me access to the courses, and I am unable to proceed with my training as a result.
I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by logging in and out, as well as using different devices and browsers, but the problem persists. I have also cleared my browser cache and cookies, yet the issue remains unresolved.
I would appreciate it if you could look into this issue on an urgent basis and provide me with a solution to regain access to my training courses.

Hi, are these training courses designed for teaching children, adults or both? The photos would suggest these modules are focused on working with young people. I'd be grateful if you could clarify.

Hi harrypickup

Thanks for your comment - most of our training courses are suitable for teachers teaching a range of ages and levels, unless specifically aimed at a life stage (for example primary learners) in which case this will be clear from the course title.

Hope that helps and that you enjoy the course,

Dear Team good day. I was not able to beat the set deadline for this course: my phone crashed. So, I stopped at Module 3 with a seventy percent (70%) completion. Now, that the course has ended but would possibly be reopened sometime in 2023, would I still be able to finish up from where I last stopped the course (70% completion?) instead of possibly starting afresh? I would not like all my past work to go in vain because I could not beat the deadline. Please, help!

Hello Master Tobi

Sorry to say that this course has now ended - it was available for four weeks from 30th August - we hope to offer it again in 2023.

thanks,
