Welcome to 'Gender in language education'

How will the course help you?

Learn to recognise different kinds of gender bias and stereotypes, some of the barriers learners face in gender equality and equity, and how to help overcome them in your context..

What does the course include?

Gender in language education is a self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: Gender representation in teaching materials

This module will introduce you to the different kinds of gender bias and stereotypes which exist in language education. It's aimed at providing you with a general introduction to and understanding of the topic as well as helping you to recognise and evaluate these issues so that you can respond to them effectively in the classroom.

Module 2: Understanding gender equality in teaching practice

This module will introduce you to ways we often perceive gender differences in the classroom. It's aimed at breaking down common assumptions about the differences between gender in education, so that you can help all of your students achieve success.

Module 3: Working with gender equality in education

This module will introduce you to some of the progress that has been made, as well as some of the barriers people face in terms of gender equality and equity, and how these can be overcome and worked with on an individual as well as a global scale.

How much does the course cost?

The course is free.

How can you get a certificate?

You will receive a certificate if you successfully complete all self-study modules.

What level of English do you need?

Minimum CEFR B1

I'm more than ready to take this course. I just wonder if the hours invested will appear in the certificate and if so how many does the course consists of.

Hello! I finished the course, but I didn't receive any certificate....I can't open my portfolio, is it anything wrong with the webpage? Could you explain me please?? thanks in advanced.

Thanks for your comment. We are sorry that there are technical difficulties and some users are unable to access our courses at the moment, so you won't be able to access the certificate just now. Our technical team is working on it and we hope to solve it soon.

I have already finished the course. How can I download the certificate? I have received a notification but it has no link or icon to suggest that it can be downloaded... Thank you for the course. I love it.

Hello. I've completed 100% of the course material. However, the certificate is not available. Although all the tasks are done, the progress % on modules 1 and 2 is not 100%. Sadly, it's not possible to send you screenshots of the course... I kindly ask you to check what's wrong and not give a generic response like "If you have completed 100% of the course, your certificate should be available to download." because, clearly, the results of the progress are not matching with the results presented at the end of each module.

I created an account but I can't enrol for the course on Gender in Language and Education. I followed instructions but I can't see anywhere any option to enrol on teh course page. Can you help?

We don't have course dates yet for a new run of this course, it will be announced on the on the main training page when it runs again, sometime in 2023:   https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/training.  The current course available is Teaching Pathways: How to teach grammar, which started on Tuesday 30th August https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/teaching-pathways-how-teach-grammar.  Hope you find a course that interests you soon until a new run of the course you are interested in.

We don't have a date yet for a new run for the course, but it will be some time in 2023. The course currently running is 'online skills for the 21st century' if you are interested in this topic.
