What are the self-study modules?

Module 1 Methods and approaches for grammar

The aim of this module is to introduce you to a range of ELT approaches for teaching grammar. You'll begin with a brief history of approaches and a look at deductive and inductive approaches to learning. You will summarise ELT approaches, outline their benefits and drawbacks as well as identify and explain inductive and deductive approaches to presenting grammar.

Module 2 Engaging with grammar noticing and restructuring

The aim of this module is to explore the concept of noticing and look at various activities to encourage your learners to notice grammatical forms. You will identify what's involved in noticing, modify typical coursebook grammar exercises to provide practice in developing noticing skills as well as design restructuring activities.

Module 3  Engaging with grammar different approaches

The aim of this module is to look at a range of techniques for introducing grammar that focus on meaning. You will summarise and evaluate a range of activities for introducing grammar, provide personalised grammar practice for your learners as well as plan the presentation stage of a grammar lesson using an inductive approach.

Course reviews

What have other teachers said about how How to teach grammar helped them?

"One example of how I applied the knowledge and skills is by shifting from isolated grammar drills to using grammar in meaningful contexts. for instance, I recently taught the past tense (simple past) by having students write personal narratives about their weekend. instead of focusing only on rules, I guided them to identify and correct tense usage within their own writing. well, this made the grammar more relevant and helped students understand how it functions in real communication."

Course participant, Indonesia

"Now I am trying to teach grammar more inductively in my classes. I am avoiding explanations and giving my students more correct examples so they can discover the rules by themselves."

Course participant, Dominican Republic

"After taking this course, I started using more interactive methods to teach grammar. For example, instead of just explaining the rules of tenses, I now use real-life situations, role-plays, and sentence-building games. This has helped my students understand and apply grammar concepts more effectively and confidently in their speaking and writing."

I have registered with the teaching grammar course but after clicking on my account I can't see my portfolio anywhere. I'm using a mobile phone.

Hi Peter_B,

These are the 'standard' mobile instructions on the site (you may have seen them and tried them already). In general, if you can't see your Portfolio it also helps to log out of all devices you are logged into the teachingEnglish page on.... then log back in on the device you will use. If this doesn't work, get back in touch and we'll try to get to where you can access it.

Access on mobile

  1. Log in to your free TeachingEnglish account.
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines next to the home button to open the menu.
  3. Below ‘Home’, you will see MY PORTFOLIO and ‘My courses’ below. Tap on MY PORTFOLIO if you don’t see ‘My courses’.
  4. Tap on ‘My courses’ to access your training.

Hello, I have started reading and am enjoying it. I did not know the labels to my methods, but it was heartening to know that I have been doing the right thing instinctively. I liked the reference section and the articles from edutopia.
Flipped learning, noticing etc are what I have been doing as per the grade of the students.

I thought i registered for this "how to teach grammar" course.
I do not see the 'How do I register for this course?' or 'This course is not available for registration' option/s at the top of the page.
It all seems inaccessible?

I understand that registration is before 19th september and the course is 4 weeks but if someone is only able to complete this in november, are the modules still open then?
Thanks

Hi Louise,

The course modules will be open until 26th September, after that participants won't be able to access them, hope that fits into your timescale.

I have started module 1 but the page stopped I don't know why.i really want to complete it

Hi Hayam,

If you've been logged into the website teaching English for a long time then it gets logged out automatically  ( remember it's logged in while you are busy on your coursework, or if you go off for a well deserved break etc). This means that you can't access the course site again until you log into teaching English again.

The solution is usually simple, ( fingers crossed it works well for you):
1. Log out, then close any windows where 'https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/' is open.
2. Go to: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/ and log in again.
3. To enrol in the course, go to: https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/ExploreProgrammes and select 'Enrol in activity' or if you have already enrolled, then go to: https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/MyProgrammes to access it and continue studying.

Hope that helps!

Hi I had registered for this a couple of days back. I had finished the first module. But when I clicked on save and return, it kept taking me to my profile page where my photograph and other details are mentioned. And then, trying hard after an hour I closed the window and returned to that page and all my work had been deleted. I had to retake the module. I am now trying to go back to the next module, and it keeps taking me to my profile page just as usual. When I go to 'My Portfolio - My courses' it just displays my personal information and photograph. How do I access this course?

Hi Elham,

See my other answer, you have to log into the site then follow My Portfolio - My courses- that takes you to the coursework, hope you can see it!

Anne

Hi SMSaeed,

The course seems to be associated with your account and you should see it if you click in 'My Portfolio' and in the drop down menu there 'My courses' - this takes you to the course page where you'll see the course ( or a sign up option if you haven't enrolled). Hope that helps and you can join the course soon!

Anne

Hi Maryam,

I'm sorry to hear you've had problems - from here your account looks fine ( I can see the course associated with your account, so following the steps  to get to My Courses should take you to the course. Log out of TeachingEnglish on all devices you have and then log back in, if that doesn't work, perhaps try on another device or at a different internet connection to see if it makes a difference. I hope you can find the way in.

Hi Cara,

I hope this is solved for you now - try logging out and back in again, you should see 'My Portfolio' - and inside it the drop down menu 'My Courses' - this takes you to the course site where the currently active course is  How to teach grammar, you should be able to start it. Let us know if not.

Hope you get in, if not, try clearing cache, that may help, and let us know if not.

Hi Luanst03,

I'm glad you have made an account, can you now see 'My Portfolio' as a menu, and inside there the dropdown menu to 'My Courses'? The first module 'Getting started' helps you to find your way around the site. In the Facebook group for the course, there are lots of helpful videos too - scroll down to where the group started to see what has been posted by the tutors. I hope that this helps you start the course and that you enjoy meeting the other participants and learning with us :). Let us know if there is something specific you don't know how to do on the site.
