Teaching English to refugees and displaced learners

How will the course help you?

By the end of Teaching English to refugees and displaced learners, you'll be able to:

  • identify strategies for creating physical and emotional safety for the learners in your classrooms
  • plan activities for large classes and/or with limited resources
  • recognise and apply effective strategies for responding to challenging and trauma-informed behaviours.

What does the course include?

  • Self-study modules that you can access at any time before the course closes
  • A certificate of achievement on successful completion of the self-study modules
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources connected to the course contents
  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative teaching ideas for you to try out (Facebook account required)
  • Learning content related to our courses on Facebook and YouTube
  • Live events and recordings with course tutors on Facebook and YouTube
  • Live events with guest speakers sharing their experiences supporting refugees and displaced learners

What are the self-study modules?

Module 1 An introduction to trauma and its effects on the classroom

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the effects of trauma on learning and behaviour in the classroom. It's aimed at providing you with a general introduction to and understanding of the topic, as well as some specific teaching strategies for creating physical and emotional safety for the learners in your classrooms.

Module 2 Teaching with minimal resources

The aim of this module is to help you teach in contexts where there are limited resources. You'll also get some ideas for teaching large classes and some tips on being resourceful.

Module 3  Dealing with very challenging behaviour

The aim of this module is to learn how to deal with behaviour which challenges you in the classroom and to understand the links between this challenging behaviour and a learner's experience of trauma.

Course reviews

What have other teachers said about how Teaching English to refugees and displaced learners helped them?

"After learning about the importance of emotional regulation, I began starting my lessons with a short calming activity, like deep breathing or a quick check-in. This helped my learners settle down and created a more focused and supportive classroom environment."

Course participant, Ukraine

"My perception of their needs has really changed since I started the course. Finally, regarding my language in the classroom, I’ve become much more aware of how to emphasize the positive intentions behind students’ behavior."

Course participant, Brazil

"Talking with learners who have particularly have a strange behavior or go through challenging situations has opened my mind in how to deal with. As a teacher working in low resource schools, I have tried to have copies of some sections of my brochure to be shared with students (sometimes individually or as groups). This has been helpful in making the learning process easier."

Course participant, Comoros

If you are teaching English, I hope you find the course useful. If you want to find resources that you can use to learn English then also try the learners' resources on this page, look for general resources under the 'skills' 'grammar' or 'vocabulary' pages.

Will I be able to access this programme at the end of my working day as I can't watch videos or live feeds during class times

Hi Magdalen,
You can access the 'self-access' part of the course when it suits you best, and the live sessions are recorded and available online not long after they finish, so you'll be able to access them after your school days. Hope you find the course interesting and useful :).

What time is the course? Our staff will be working until the afternoon

Hi Hollygately,
All our courses are made up of self-access modules so that teachers from any time zone can complete the courses when they are free. There are some 'live sessions' to support the group with the topics they are learning about and they may be at times your teachers are working, but they are all recorded and they can watch them online later.
Hope your teachers enjoy the course!

Dear All,
Can you please confirm the commencement date of the course?
The description above mentions 7th June. However, in "My Learning" area, under "My Events" the first session is due to start on 2nd June with a panel discussion.
Can you please clarify?
Many thanks in advance for your kind feedback.
Best,
Simona

Hi Simoblue,

The course starts on the 7th June. On and after that date you'll be able to access the course following the instructions on the page.

How do I sign up for the course?

The event on the 2nd June is a Facebook Live panel discussion to generate discussion around the topic and interest in the course. You'll find it streamed on the TeachingEnglish facebook page. If you can't attend at that time, you can watch the recording after.

Hope you enjoy the course and event if you can attend,

Anne

I have completed the course , where I can download my certificate

Hi  Amjed,

Certificates are available to participants who complete 70% of the course material. When you've done that, to access your certificate, go to the course platform where you have done your training. Click or tap 'My awards'. If you have completed 70% of the course, your certificate should be available to download. Hope you found the course work interesting and hope you can stay around for the discussion on the forums :).

Hi,

I am accessing this from two different MacBook Air machines. I am struggling with both.
When I use Firefox, I struggle to access my course.
When I use Safari, access itself is easy, but my work does not save. I had to do the same unit four times before it auto-saved. On the plus side, I got 100% for it.
Which browsers work best for this platform?

Thanks

Hi Gwenna,

That sounds very frustrating for you. Can you try to see if Chrome works better? If not can you post your question to the technical help team on the platform, there is a yellow 'help' button on course pages, they  may be able to give you specific technical advice. Hope you get onto the course reliably!

Anne

There's no way I can sign up for the course, I tried but there's no SIGN option. Is the course closed?
