Oxymoronic: Can you even attempt to decolonize English teaching?

There is currently a lot of long-overdue discussion about ‘decolonization’ and the teaching of English. However, with the entire discipline still based on principles developed during and through global colonization efforts, it is worth considering whether or not these efforts are doomed to fail, especially in contexts where educators are required to promulgate standardized language ideologies. This webinar will begin with a brief review of a few important concepts and terms relating to different axes of oppression and hierarchy – including racism and ableism –  and how they contribute to the harm that the industry continues to perpetuate. And then participants will have a chance to consider and co-construct ways to resist colonial attitudes and expectations in their daily practice.
