Climate action in language education

Learn to integrate environmental issues in English language teaching and develop the skills you need to take and sustain meaningful and impactful action to protect the environment in your local context. Enrolment is now closed, but if you're already enrolled, you can access and work on the course until 31 March 2025.

What will you learn?

Module 1 — Introducing environmental issues

The aim of this module is to explore why environmental issues should be a constant topic in your language classes and what benefits learners can get from discussing these topics. You will explain why it's important to include environmental issues in your classes, research and prioritise subject-specific terms and concepts according to your context and analyse how to include environmental issues in your classes.

Module 2 — Lessons with a sustainability focus

In this module, you'll look at the barriers that stop you focusing on environmental issues, ways to overcome them and how to plan lessons with a focus on environmental issues. You will identify opportunities for language practice in lessons with a sustainability focus, consider principles for planning lessons that include sustainability and evaluate techniques used in part of a lesson that includes environmental issues.

Module 3 — Making sustainability part of your learners' lives

The aim of this module is to understand the different methods that you as a language teacher can use to help fight the climate emergency in ways that go beyond the classroom and to provide you with some of the tools you'll need to act. You will explain different levels of community action, design a local environmentally themed community project with your learners and join and participate in your own professional development community.

What else does the course include?

Climate action in language education is a self-study training course, which is divided into three-hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

When is the course?

Enrolment is now closed, but if you're already enrolled, you can access and work on the course until 31 March 2025. Climate action in language education will open again in October 2025.

How much does the course cost?

The course is free.

How can you get a certificate?

You will receive a certificate if you successfully complete all self-study modules.

What level of English do you need?

Minimum CEFR B1

Hi Tigist

Are you enrolled on the course? Are you having problems registering, or is it that you cannot access the course from the courses homepage? If you are registered, you need to make sure you are logged in, then click on "My Porfolio- My courses" in the top menu. If the course page doesn't open from there, try logging out and logging back in again and it should work.

If the problem is with accessing the course once you are on the homepage, you will need to use the "Help" button to resolve the issue.

Hi, I just found out about this very interesting course and I enrolled straight away. Do I need to complete all the tasks by the end of next week or do I have extra time since I've only enrolled now? Thank you!

The course content is only available until the end of the course, so you will only have access to the material until the final course date.

If you have completed all the modules but this is not reflected in the course progress, try contacting technical support by clicking on the yellow "Help" button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

This is a self-access course, meaning you can access the materials online at any time - there is no fixed schedule for the course.

The course starts on Tuesday 19th October. Once you have enrolled, click on the "My Portfolio-my courses" tab on the top left - this will take you to the training platform.

Have you already set up your TeachingEnglish account? If not, you can follow the instructions above which will tell you how to enrol. If you have an account already, when you log in to the TeachingEnglish website, you should see the "My Portfolio" tab on the top left. If you click on there you should see the courses you have enrolled on.

Let us know if you are still having problems.

Hello

If you have created an account and enrolled, you should see a tab at the top left of the screen that says "My Portfolio". If you click on that tab, there is a drop down menu that says "My courses". Click on that and it will take you to the training platform where you can see all the courses you are enrolled in.
