EVO (Electronic Village Online) Sessions have started once more.

EVO (Electronic Village Online) Sessions have started once more. It takes six weeks and participiants can engage with experts and teachers all over the world in collaborative, online sessions. We finished the third week and I've already met many teachers from different countries. This year, there are so many interesting sessions so it has been difficult for me to choose which ones to attend. There are also Turkish teachers moderating two of the sessions. I'm very happy on behalf of them.

In this blog entry, I would like to share some other Web 2.0 tools that we can use in our classes.

Podcasting:

I've come across with another article of Graham Stanley. It is about podcasting and he has explained everything we need to know about it. Here is the link.

Why to use podcasting? Here are some reasons:

  • It enables students to share knowledge and form a relationship between the content and each other.

  • It has creative outlet that lets users to share and collaborate.

  • It can be shared with world wide audience.

  • It is a good listening activity. Students can hear authentic language.

  • It is good for developing speaking fluency, listening and communication skills.

  • It is a good way to motivate students to create a new product. It can also motivate shy students.

We use podcasting for listening homework,informing others about class news and updates, current events and areas of interest, contributing ideas, student's presentations, feedback evaluation, supplementary materials etc.

RSS

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. It is the news reader and the content that comes to you instead of looking for it. There are billions of webpages that are updating their contents everyday. With RSS, you can have the latest news come directly to you without clicking from site to site. Once you subscribe for it to a website, it will detect the new content and make it avaliable for you to read it. It can save us so much time and energy. Here are some sites to get a news reader : Bloglines, google reader.

How to:

  1. Find a webpage that you want to get the changes.

  2. Find the RSS link, the orange icon.

  3. Copy the link to your reader.

  4. Organize your feed.

Here are some reasons why to use it:

  • Students can have their own RSS feeds for their own blogs and other students can subscribe. They can easily learn about the new content.

  • We can easily find the new content of our individuals students' by subscribing to our student's feeder.

  • We can track students' writing development on blogs.

  • Students can get alerted of homework.

  • We,as teachers,can follow authors, journalists and news that are important for us.

Social Bookmarking

It lets us keep our personal collection of links online and sharing them with other people. It is very similiar to the favourites in your browser. You save a link and tag it with many keywords and even if you are not on a computer you own, you can still find your favourite links. Why to use social bookmarking? Here are some reasons:

  • We can use for further reading about a topic.

  • We can keep our lists and we can share them with colleagues to learn more.

  • We can keep resource lists for our students.

  • You can tag the things you want for recommended reading or that will help our students in their homework under English Class 7/A

Dear All,

I would like to share two new voice tools that I've learnt from BaW session. One of them is Chinswing. It is easy and fun and collaborative.The other one is Vocaroo. Also, here are some other ways to use voice tools in our teaching.

  • Singing songs
  • Revising what we did in our lessons
  • Describing themselves, their towns, family, friends, school etc.
  • Role playing
  • Replying to a text or another audio
  • Interwieving with other teachers, students etc.
