Teaching pathways: How to teach pronunciation

Our course 'Teaching pathways - How to teach pronunciation' helps you develop your skills in teaching pronunciation effectively to your students.

About the course

In this practical 4-week online course, you will increase your understanding of phonology and your ability to support learners with effective pronunciation activities in the classroom.

Module 1: Understanding pronunciation

The aim of this module is to explore the sound system of English and the way sounds function within it. The module also looks at how to describe the key aspects of pronunciation and relate these to the teaching of pronunciation.

Module 2: Engaging with pronunciation – individual sounds

The aim of this module is to help you to prevent and correct their students' individual sound problems that are relevant to their own context. They experience and evaluate a range of activities designed to practise problematic sounds, and they are given the opportunity to practise teaching their peers.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • identify the individual sounds of English that are most difficult for your learners to pronounce
  • use a range of activities to give your learners practise in pronouncing problematic individual sounds
  • use effective techniques to prevent poor pronunciation of individual sounds from developing
  • use effective techniques to correct mispronunciation of individual sounds.
Module 3: Engaging with pronunciation – techniques and activities

The aim of this module is for you to understand how to integrate pronunciation practice in the classroom. The module looks at various aspects of pronunciation including stress, intonation and features of connected speech. You'll experience and evaluate activities, and plan how to integrate pronunciation activities with other aspects of language learning.

This course is not currently available. Future course dates will be announced later this year

Certificates

For participants who successfully complete all tasks and achieve a score of 70% or above in the online exercises, there will be a downloadable certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Level of English required

Minimum CEFR B1

Unfortunately this course is now finished. the next course we are running is Teaching Pathways: Skills for Remote Teaching which starts on April 12th. If the How to teach Pronunciation course is run in the future again, it will be advertised on the main TeachingEnglish pages :)

Congratulations for finishing the course! On the course platform (MY PORTFOLIO > My courses), go to 'My awards' in the menu. Your certificate should be there - as long as you have completed 70% of the work.

It was said that we would have access to the course until 04/04, but I've been trying to open the course for four days without success. I have no idea why the link for "my courses" is not working. Can somebody please help me?

I'm sorry to hear this and we're not quite sure why this happened to you ( the course was still open). If it happens again on one of our courses, try logging out of your account and logging back in again, this may help, and also clearing your cache probably will help. Let's hope you don't have the same problem on a future course with us :).

Hi Serenacsr,
We don't have a confirmed start date for a new run of Teaching pathways: How to teach Pronunciation' yet. We'll publish dates on the main page when they are programmed. The only course that is currently available is Teaching Pathways: Skills for Remote Teaching, registration is open until the beginning of May if you are interested. https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/teaching-pathways-skills-rem…

I enrolled this course two months age. When I almost finished the course, I found myself rejected from the website with no any reason. I can then log in to my account when the course deadline ended. All my hard work with course has been lost.I

I am so sorry to hear that all the hard work you put into the course isn't registered on the system now. All our courses have end dates which we try to make sure participants know about clearly and usually if people have log in problems at any time before that date, logging out and back in again, and clearing the cache sorts them out. I am really sorry that you couldn't finish the course before all the course data was closed.
