Teaching pathways: How to teach pronunciation

Our course 'Teaching pathways - How to teach pronunciation' helps you develop your skills in teaching pronunciation effectively to your students.

A teacher standing in the classroom surrounded by students and giving instructions

About the course

In this practical 4-week online course, you will increase your understanding of phonology and your ability to support learners with effective pronunciation activities in the classroom.

Module 1: Understanding pronunciation

The aim of this module is to explore the sound system of English and the way sounds function within it. The module also looks at how to describe the key aspects of pronunciation and relate these to the teaching of pronunciation.

Module 2: Engaging with pronunciation – individual sounds

The aim of this module is to help you to prevent and correct their students' individual sound problems that are relevant to their own context. They experience and evaluate a range of activities designed to practise problematic sounds, and they are given the opportunity to practise teaching their peers.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • identify the individual sounds of English that are most difficult for your learners to pronounce
  • use a range of activities to give your learners practise in pronouncing problematic individual sounds
  • use effective techniques to prevent poor pronunciation of individual sounds from developing
  • use effective techniques to correct mispronunciation of individual sounds.
Module 3: Engaging with pronunciation – techniques and activities

The aim of this module is for you to understand how to integrate pronunciation practice in the classroom. The module looks at various aspects of pronunciation including stress, intonation and features of connected speech. You'll experience and evaluate activities, and plan how to integrate pronunciation activities with other aspects of language learning.

Hello,
I have enrolled in the course but I cannot access it. I tried clicking the link to the course homepage posted in the comments above, I also tried to access it from My portfolio / My courses tab, but all it does is bring me to an empty (blank) page. I tried to access it from both my computer and my mobile device (mac and iphone), but neither worked. Has anyone else had the same problem? How can I solve it?
I will be grateful for any help.

It's been 20-22 hours since I can't access this course. I finished unit-1 of Module-2 right before this problem. At first, I thought it might be browser problem and tried another browser too. But it doesn't loads the course page at all. I still need to finish 5 units in total.
Since I couldn't find any emergency contact email addresses, I posted this problem issue here to take an immediate kind consideration. So, I can resume my learning again.
PS: I noticed today that the interface of this course site have changed from the yesterday.

Greetings!
Due to the recent update, I am aware that the link will be available until April 4th. May I know where can I get the link and when it is accessible again? I have checked the tab under 'My Portfolio' but it led me to a blank page. Hope to get feedback soon. Thank you!

Hi Robert,
Each course is programmed for specific dates so that participants can learn together and interact with course facilitators. The courses you mention haven't got new starting dates yet. The next collaborative course is Teaching Pathways: Skills for Remote Teaching starting on 12th April. If you have made an account, you'll see information about this course on the start date through 'my portfolio'. Hope to see you on a course soon!

Very disappointed to have the blank page issue as others in the comments. Would it be possible to re-programme this course soon?

Happy to enroll in the course. It shows my progress is 100%, does it mean I have completed the course? If yes, Could someone please help me to download my certificate of completion? Thank you!

Hi Ana,
Once you are on the course platform (MY PORTFOLIO > My courses), go to 'My awards' in the menu. Your certificate should be there - as long as you have completed 70% of the work, which it sounds like you have!

Hello.
Please provide an update about when the course site will be accessible again. We were last informed that it would be accessible after the 24th March. I’m still unable to access it today. I’m based in the UK.

Thank you.

Kindly assist

Hi Bunmi,
There were problems around the time of a system change, I hope you managed to keep learning despite that!

I am on the page for comments and trying to access module 2 on individual sounds. I am going round in circles here - not for the first time. Where do I go when I just want to pick up where I left off or join the course at a different point? Do I have to complete every unit before I can do the next? When I do get onto a some exercises (by chance, usually), I don't know how to get off it and move to the next. It seems there is a lot 'about' how to use the tool but when I have learnt it, I am still going round in circles. I am grateful for what is offered here, but find the interface really confusing. Maybe it is not suited to google chrome, or IoS. I don't know. Maybe it is just me.

Thank you for making this course available! I've completed all modules and made sure to finish each exercise with a score of at least 70%. Is there anything else I need to do to qualify for a certificate? How will these become available?
