Teaching pathways: How to teach pronunciation

Our course 'Teaching pathways - How to teach pronunciation' helps you develop your skills in teaching pronunciation effectively to your students.

About the course

In this practical 4-week online course, you will increase your understanding of phonology and your ability to support learners with effective pronunciation activities in the classroom.

Module 1: Understanding pronunciation

The aim of this module is to explore the sound system of English and the way sounds function within it. The module also looks at how to describe the key aspects of pronunciation and relate these to the teaching of pronunciation.

Module 2: Engaging with pronunciation – individual sounds

The aim of this module is to help you to prevent and correct their students' individual sound problems that are relevant to their own context. They experience and evaluate a range of activities designed to practise problematic sounds, and they are given the opportunity to practise teaching their peers.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • identify the individual sounds of English that are most difficult for your learners to pronounce
  • use a range of activities to give your learners practise in pronouncing problematic individual sounds
  • use effective techniques to prevent poor pronunciation of individual sounds from developing
  • use effective techniques to correct mispronunciation of individual sounds.
Module 3: Engaging with pronunciation – techniques and activities

The aim of this module is for you to understand how to integrate pronunciation practice in the classroom. The module looks at various aspects of pronunciation including stress, intonation and features of connected speech. You'll experience and evaluate activities, and plan how to integrate pronunciation activities with other aspects of language learning.

This course is not currently available. Future course dates will be announced later this year

Free

Certificates

For participants who successfully complete all tasks and achieve a score of 70% or above in the online exercises, there will be a downloadable certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Level of English required

Minimum CEFR B1

The course has only just started today. Certificates are only available for people who complete all of the course activities.  The course has three modules, and you will need to complete all the activities to be eligible for a certificate.

To enrol in the course, you need to follow Steps 1-4 above. First, you need to create an account and make sure you are logged in. Then click on the link to the courses homepage and you can click on "Explore all courses" to enrol. The course starts today (1st March).

Even though I have an account & have enrolled for 'Teaching Pathways - how to teach pronunciation', I can't find My Courses or MY PORTFOLIO.

If you are logged in and enrolled in the course, you can click on the courses homepage

Here you will see "Your week ahead" and you should be able to access the course modules from there. Let us know if you continue to have problems.

If you are enrolled in the course, you should be able to access the course hompage here 

You should also be able to see a tab at the top of the page "My Portfolio" - if you click on that, you will see a drop-down tab that says "My courses", and you can access the course homepage from there too.

To enrol you need to follow steps 1-4 on the page above. Firstly, you will need to create an account and make sure you are logged in. Then you can access the courses homepage - click on "Explore all courses" and then you can click to enrol in this one.

If you are enrolled in the course but are having any technical problems with the course platform, can you use the orange "Help" button at the bottom right hand side of the page?

Hello everyone, 

I could not understand why I failed to download the certificate even after completing all modules. I had sent a message informing you that two weeks later I received an email instructing me to open the page and download it. I follow the instruction with no success. Also, I would like to inform you that I was not interacting in the Facebook group because had problems with my computer. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for your message. When you log in to TeachingEnglish, please find 'MY PORTFOLIO' in the top menu bar. From there, you should see 'My courses'. Click on 'My courses' and you will be taken to the course where you can view and complete the modules.

Thanks for your message. When you log in to TeachingEnglish, please find 'MY PORTFOLIO' in the top menu bar. From there, you should see 'My courses'. Click on 'My courses' and you will be taken to the course where you can view and complete the modules.

Hi British Council, there is a mistake in my certificate. My name is Phùng Thủy Tiên but in the certificate is " PhùngThy Tiên" I don't have any spelling mistake when I typed my name. I also try to fix by edit my name in my profile and reset but there is no change in my certificate. Can you have me to fix ? You can change " Phùng Thy Tiên" into " Phung Thuy Tien" thank you very much !

Hi, Can you use the 'Help' button on the course platform to ask for your name to be changed. Please also edit your name in your TeachingEnglish account to how you want it to appear.

I have a problem having access to "my courses" in my portfolio. Modules 1 and 2 are completed and I'm almost done with Module 3 but the link doesn't work. There is a blank page instead. Can you help me please?

I thank British Council, esp. the relevant team for this project, very much for giving me a big chance to have learned how to teach pronunciation. I used to be a baby to this area and lack confidence to deal with it. But, with what I have learned from you, I feel more confident to help my students be more able to pronounce more naturally.

I try to open it but the page is empty so I can't finish learning the Course.
Also I couldn’t find My Awards.
(I saw them in my portfolio before)
Who can help me?

thank you for this course;

However, I can't access any of it today, although I'm logged in and I have been registered for 3 weeks. When I click on "my courses" under the portofolio tab, a blank page appears, that's it.

When I clicked "my courses" under "my portfolio", the page was blank. I tried opening it using different web browsers, but the result was the same.

It was fine when I did the introduction module.
