Develop your understanding of listening skills and find activities to help your learners enjoy learning from listening.


What does the course include?

How to teach listening is a free self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: Understanding listening skills

By the end of this module, you'll be able to:

-identify differences between real-life and in-class listening
-analyse and meet learners' needs
-list listening sub-skills and activities that allow learners to practise these sub-skills
-evaluate problems associated with teaching listening and generate solutions
-design and plan classroom listening activities.

Module 2: Engaging with listening – active listening

By the end of this module, you'll be able to:

-identify active listening skills and strategies
-explore interferences with active listening
-apply strategies to improve active listening skills
-evaluate how acquiring active listening skills could be beneficial to teachers.

Module 3: Engaging with listening – strategies

By the end of this module you'll be able to:

-list the differences between spoken and written forms of language
-explain how non-verbal communication and intonation can aid listening
-identify examples of transactional and interactional listening and sub-skills that are practised during listening activities
-analyse and plan classroom activities that promote strategies to increase effective listening skills.
