Pre-sessional courses for overseas students

This 1978 title offers a snapshot of English teaching practices for overseas students in the UK in the late 1970s. The book is a collection of edited papers from the national seminar, Pre-sessional English courses for Overseas Students in Higher Education held at the University of Manchester in April 1977.

The seminar was organised by SELMOUS (The Group for Special English Language Materials for Overseas University Students), which had been founded in 1972 and was the forerunner of what is now BALEAP. In his Introduction, RR Jordan refers to the wide range of innovative work being carried out in the UK in the fields of social English, study skills and English for specific purposes. Topics covered by the papers in this book include: assessing and accommodating students’ language needs and levels of proficiency; course and syllabus design; pronunciation activities; study skills; the teaching of social skills and social English; and materials production.
