About the webinar
This webinar provides a brief history of using picturebooks in Primary English Language Teaching and presents the PEPELT project – Picturebooks in European Primary English Language Teaching.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of:
- what a picturebook is and its potential for the PELT classroom
- how to select and use picturebooks
- how materials can be developed around picturebooks to provide children with exposure to rich authentic language and promote a holistic approach to teaching and learning
Finally, we take you on a tour of the PEPELT website to give you an overview of the wide range of free resources at your disposal.

About the speakers
Gail Ellis has been working with picturebooks since 1989. Her publications include Tell it Again!, Teaching children how to learn, and Teaching English to Pre-Primary Children. Gail’s interests include children’s rights, picturebooks in primary ELT, young learner ELT management and inclusive practices.
Tatia Gruenbaum taught EFL, EAP and ESP at a number of Higher and Further Education institutions in London and is now an English lecturer at the Avans University of Applied Sciences in Breda (NL) and a PhD candidate at the UCL Institute of Education. She holds an MA TESOL from the IoE and her PhD research centres on the use of picturebooks as a tool in pre-service primary teacher education in the Netherlands.
Sandie Mourão is a research fellow at Nova University Lisbon, where she is researching picturebooks for intercultural citizenship education. She has been in ELT for over 30 years, using picturebooks in the classroom and in teacher education, with a particular interest in early language learning.
