Multilingualisms and development

Multilingualisms and Development - Language & Development Conference proceedings edited by Hywel Coleman.

This volume brings together twenty of the most important presentations from the 11th Language & Development Conference, which took place in New Delhi, India, in 2015.

The volume is organised in four parts:

  • Multilingualism, marginalisation and empowerment
  • Mother-tongue-based multilingual education
  • Multilingualism and the metropolis
  • English in a multilingual world.

A discussion by Professor DP Pattanayak prefaces the collection, while an agenda for further research into multilingualism and development forms an appendix.

Half the chapters concern themselves with aspects of multilingualism in India. Four chapters discuss multilingualism in different parts of Africa, focussing particularly on Kenya, Tanzania and Mauritius. Three chapters look at multilingualism in other parts of Asia beyond India (in Afghanistan, Malaysia and Nepal) and three further chapters examine multilingualism in European contexts (the Basque Country and the UK).

The 25 eminent authors whose work is gathered here include: Rukmini Banerji, CEO of the Pratham Education Foundation; Srikant Sarangi, Director of the Danish Institute of Humanities and Medicine; Ajit Mohanty, Founder Director of the Indian National Multilingual Education Resource Consortium (NMRC); Kalafunja Mlang’a O-saki, Professor of Education at the University of Dodoma, Tanzania; Minati Panda, current Director of the NMRC; and Birgit Brock-Utne of the University of Oslo.
