Making the transition from teacher to teacher educator
On Saturday 5 October 2019, the British Council and IATEFL co-hosted a one-day web conference to celebrate World Teachers Day.
About the talk
In this round table discussion, the panelists show how teachers might plan their continuing professional development (CPD) in order to move into teacher education. Members of our teacher educator online community will discuss the challenges and rewards of being a teacher educator and give practical advice on differences between teaching and teacher education and possible transferable skills. By the end of the session, teachers should have a better idea of what the teacher educator role involves and what CPD activities can be done to develop into this role. Existing teacher educators learn about tools and support available for their own professional development.
About the presenters
Cristiana Osan became a DELTA-certified teacher educator after working for 11 years as a teacher. For the last 12 years, she has worked as a teacher educator, a trainers' trainer, an online moderator, an examiner for international certificates and materials writer, thus collaborating in various projects with thousands of teachers around the world.
Desislava Zareva is a teacher, teacher trainer, online courses moderator and author of ELT materials. She has a Mlitt degree in Cultural Studies from Strathclyde University, UK and MA degree in Applied Linguistics from New Bulgarian University, Bulgaria, where she has been working for over 20 years. Intercultural education, learner autonomy, online learning, learning technologies and CLIL are some of the topics she is currently interested in actively working on. She is a frequent presenter at conferences and workshops and is constantly trying to develop professionally.
Ellen Darling is a consultant for research and insight at the British Council and has over 25 years of international experience working as a teacher, teacher educator, CELTA Assessor, author and editor. She has worked in Spain, Colombia, Italy, Egypt, Morocco and Qatar. Her special interests are teaching young learners, using authentic literature, EMI, continuing professional development and teacher education.
Nelson Arditto is a teacher and teacher trainer at the British Council. He has been involved in teacher education for a few years now. He has worked as a DELTA local tutor, DipTESOL and TYLEC tutor and as CertTESOL Course Director. He also works as an e-moderator and has tutored on a variety of different British Council online courses for different projects around the world. He is keen on professional development and his areas of interest are ICT, CLIL and teacher education.
Teodora Naiba has been teaching English for almost 20 years in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She became a teacher educator in 2007 and she started working as an e-moderator and e-mentor for British Council online courses ten years ago. She has worked in many different projects with teachers all over the world.
