As part of our programme to recognise and celebrate World Refugee Day on 20 June, join our Language for Resilience online course for teachers. • How to create a trauma-sensitive learning environment
  • How to work with limited resources
  • How to manage challenging behaviour.

How do I sign up for the course?

About the course

Module 1: An introduction to trauma and its effects on the classroom

By the end of this module, you will:

  • be able to define trauma and understand its possible causes
  • be able to reflect on the effects on learning and behaviour in the classroom through examples of students and consider the role of the teacher in endings and transitions
  • learn some interesting ways to create physical and emotional safety through basic strategies
Module 2: Teaching with minimal resources

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • identify the resources available in the classroom.
  • use a variety of activities when teaching with limited resources and adapt an activity for a particular teaching context
  • analyse the advantages and disadvantages of different activities and be more resourceful when faced with a low-resource context
Module 3: Dealing with very challenging behaviour

By the end of this module, you will:

  • be able to understand behaviour as a communication of need – asking what has happened to you rather than what’s wrong with you.
  • be able to recognise unconscious defence mechanisms: breaking negative patterns of interaction: choosing a different response.
  • learn some practical classroom strategies to manage meaningful communication and interactions.

Start dates and duration

The course begins on 7th June 2022 and lasts for four weeks. Each module involves approximately three hours of study.

Hi Magdalen,
You can access the 'self-access' part of the course when it suits you best, and the live sessions are recorded and available online not long after they finish, so you'll be able to access them after your school days. Hope you find the course interesting and useful :).

Hi Hollygately,
All our courses are made up of self-access modules so that teachers from any time zone can complete the courses when they are free. There are some 'live sessions' to support the group with the topics they are learning about and they may be at times your teachers are working, but they are all recorded and they can watch them online later.
Hope your teachers enjoy the course!

Dear All,
Can you please confirm the commencement date of the course?
The description above mentions 7th June. However, in "My Learning" area, under "My Events" the first session is due to start on 2nd June with a panel discussion.
Can you please clarify?
Many thanks in advance for your kind feedback.
Best,
Simona

Hi Simoblue,

The course starts on the 7th June. On and after that date you'll be able to access the course following the instructions on the page.

How do I sign up for the course?

The event on the 2nd June is a Facebook Live panel discussion to generate discussion around the topic and interest in the course. You'll find it streamed on the TeachingEnglish facebook page. If you can't attend at that time, you can watch the recording after.

Hope you enjoy the course and event if you can attend,

Anne
