International Women's Day is celebrated every year on 8 March. The theme for 2022 is #BreakTheBias

From the International Women's Day website:

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

To celebrate this day, we have brought together a range of practical resources for your English language classroom, online events you can attend and a podcast episode to listen to.

TeachingEnglish Facebook Live Q&A

The British Council’s #TeachingEnglish team are marking UN International Women’s Day 2022 with a live and interactive video discussion. A global panel of expert educators will be exploring this year’s theme of #BreakTheBias. We will be looking at how teachers can help create a gender equal world by sharing experiences and advice on we can make our classrooms and lessons free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

We invite teachers to take part in this live event by following the discussion and sharing your own ideas and experiences with our panel and the teacher community. We look forward to hearing from you in the comments section of our Facebook Live video , and including this diverse range of experiences and perspectives in our discussion.

The event will be livestreamed on our Facebook page at 14.00 GMT on Tuesday 8 March 2022.

Unsung heroes 

A 60-minute lesson plan for secondary and adult learners of English at CEFR level B1 and above. 

This lesson, devised specifically for International Women’s Day, helps to raise awareness of some not very famous, but nonetheless important, women.

This lesson aims to raise awareness of learners’ own perceptions of gender roles in jobs and encourage an inclusive attitude.
