In this webinar, Dr Susan Russak and Dr Richard KS Wong highlight how The Get Set, Go! Phonics program, recipient of the 2018 ELTons Award in the category of Excellence in Course innovation, has transformed the literacy experience of 3- to 6-year-old ESL kindergartners. The program has taken into account research findings on ESL children’s reading development, the need to teach vocabulary and phonics skills and the importance of scripted lesson plans. In terms of originality, the program is based on the development of phonological awareness in children and proceeds from syllable to sound knowledge. It also includes blending and segmentation tasks involving onsets and rhyme families.

About the speakers
Dr. Susie Russak is presently the head of the English teacher-training unit in the Faculty of Education at BeitBerl College, Israel. She has many years of experience training English teachers and teacher mentors. She has two Master’s Degrees in Reading and Learning Disabilities and a PhD in Linguistics. Her research interests include literacy acquisition in multilingual learners of differing ability levels and ages, and the effect of learning disabilities on personal, professional, academic and linguistic development across the lifespan. In addition to publishing research studies and books in these areas, she was also the head writer of the Assessment Battery for Literacy in English (ABLE) kit, a kit to assess difficulties in the beginning stages of English language and literacy aquisition, as well as school-based English language programmes aimed for struggling learners of English Rescue 1,2 and Chance (University Publishing Press, Israel) and Get Set, Go! Phonics (Oxford University Press, China). The Get Set, Go! Phonics series won a British Council ELTons Award in the category of Excellence in Course Innovation in London on 18 June 2018. The ELTons awards are the only international awards that recognize innovation in English language teaching.
Dr Richard KS Wong is an experienced teacher educator who specializes in the education of children aged between 0 and 8 years of age. He obtained his BA (Linguistics and German), and his PhD (Language Acquisition) from the University of Hong Kong. He won two highly competitive research grants from the University Grants Committee (Hong Kong) which enabled him to research into the bilingual language development and education of Hong Kong children. To bridge the gap between research and practice, he has coauthored a number of home-based and school-based English language programmes published by Oxford University Press (China), including Oxford Path, Get Set, Go! Oxford English, and Get Set, Go! Phonics. The Get Set, Go! Phonics series won a British Council ELTons Award in the category of Excellence in Course Innovation in London on 18 June 2018. The ELTons awards are the only international awards that recognize innovation in English language teaching.

Our webinars currently take place online in Adobe Connect and they are free and accesible to anyone. You do not need any special equipment to watch the webinars apart from a computer with the audio on.
If you have never attended a TeachingEnglish webinar before, you may need to create a password. You will need to register with a valid email address. Once you have registered you will receive a confirmation email. Keep this email safe - it contains the URL to join the webinar.

Problems joining the webinar
Only 10 participants are permitted to join the webinar until 30 minutes before it begins. From 30 minutes before the webinar, everyone will be able to join.
