I have completely changed my point of view concerning native speakers: An EMI training project promoting emancipatory pedagogy

This intervention project was designed to help University teachers deliver their teaching via English Medium.

In the context of globalization and internationalization of Higher Education, EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) is becoming a rapidly growing global phenomenon, and provision is outpacing empirical research. One of several problems with implementing EMI concerns both the linguistic and pedagogical preparation of teachers for EMI delivery.

Using a two-phase programme of delivery and dialogic teaching, this project offered an EMI training programme to two groups: established lecturers, and trainee teachers in English. Unlike other training programmes, this training focused on raising awareness among participants, of the international, political and ideological dimensions of EMI. The training programme was received with marked difference in the two groups. Implications of our findings are discussed in the context of future EMI training needs.
