The development of ELT: The Dunford seminars, 1978–1993

This 1997 book, edited by Gerry Abbott and Mike Beaumont, is a compilation of selected papers from the annual residential seminars for ELT specialists employed or sponsored by the British Council which were held mainly at Dunford House, Sussex, during the period 1978–93.

Christopher Brumfit’s Foreword seeks to place the discussions in this volume within the changing British political context of the 1970s and 1980s. He draws a picture of English language teaching professionals attempting to meet the often conflicting educational and political demands that resulted.

In Part 1, Developments in ELT, contributions cover communicative teaching, curriculum design, evaluation of learning outcomes, teacher training, and project reports.

In Part 2, ELT in development, the papers range from aid project planning, administration and evaluation to appropriate methodology, contrasting attitudes to learning and development, and power relationships.

Finally, in Part 3, Looking into the distance, authors writing in 1993 looked in detail at the practicalities of distance learning, including teacher education.
