Creating Vokis - Online animated characters that speak

This lesson introduces a tool to help learners develop their speaking skills.

Vokis are great for practising speaking skills with learners of all ages. Creating an animated character and giving it a voice is really fun to do and breaks down the inhibitions that learners often have when faced with recording themselves speaking in English.


  • To practise speaking skills – pronunciation
  • To develop familiarisation with online tools

Age group

Primary – adult


CEFR level A1+


90 minutes


The lesson plan can be downloaded in PDF format below. In addition, you will need:

  • Access to one computer per pair of learners – each computer needs to have:
    • an internet connection
    • Adobe Flash Player
    • a headset with microphone
  • Ideally, a computer attached to a data projector for demonstrating the activity to the class and reviewing

There are so many possibilities for speaking activities with this website.  Plus, it's a cool way for kids to send someone to their parents.  A fun way to show that they've been working on their English speaking, which I've found tends to be the most difficult skill to work on.  Thanks!
