The CPD framework for materials development
In this presentation we describe the process used to write a new course fully mapped to the British Council CPD framework. We give examples of professional practices used and how individual activities reflected a development in each competency.
Developing skills in materials writing and adaptation is a modular, flexible course comprising ten 90-minute sessions. It has been designed for experienced teachers and trainers and assumes some knowledge of materials writing. Topics covered include: writing learning outcomes, evaluating materials, writing for large projects and designing and adapting activities.
The accompanying portfolio has also been mapped to the British Council CPD framework and provides participants with opportunities to reflect on and apply their learning. The presentation provides participants with practical suggestions on how they can begin new material development projects keeping the CPD framework in mind. It also gives them an insight on using the CPD framework, its benefits and challenges. While the course was written for use in India, the approach used can be adopted for any context which makes the presentation relevant to people across the globe.
About the speakers:
Debbie Candy has been writing and editing materials for the British Council for the last eight years. She has been involved in many projects both face-to-face and online including CiPELT, Baseline for Tanzania, the SEN course and over the last two years has led the editing and written new modules for the Teaching for Success project.
One of Debbie’s major projects has been mapping British Council courses to the curriculum of various countries and more recently to the professional practices in the CPD Framework. This has helped shape new courses by refining the learning outcomes so ensuring that these courses are well-rounded and cover the most useful areas of professional development.
Deepali Dharmaraj is Senior Academic Manager – Training Consultant Network and Resources, English Partnerships and has been with the British Council since 2009. She has worked on large scale teacher development projects in the areas of academic project management, material development and training. Her involvement in material development has included the design and development of face-to-face and self-access material for teachers, trainers and learners in primary and secondary levels. The material she has developed is being used in projects across the country and region.
