Counselling is a teacher talking with a learner about their learning and advising them.

A teacher in Qatar talking with a student individually

It can be done in a formal or informal way, and integrated into the beginning or end of a language course.

Example
At the end of the course, each learner has 15 minutes of counselling with the teacher. They discuss the learner's strengths and weaknesses, progress, plans and get feedback about the course.

In the classroom
Young learners can be helped by having counselling sessions with their parents. This is an effective way to include the parents as a learning resource and support.
