About the seminar

This seminar focuses on strategies for integrating Equality and Diversity within your English teaching practice, to foster a positive atmosphere conducive to learning. Language acquisition can be hindered if learners are not in an environment which is conducive to fostering a welcoming atmosphere where all feel free to talk about themselves, their identities and personal lives. This is particularly relevant to LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) ESOL students. However, ESOL learners can sometimes display strong homophobic views, linked to culture, religion and personal beliefs.

LGBT lives will be used as an example of integrating E&D. Participants have the opportunity to reflect on potential classroom issues and share good practice. It also explores some of the challenges surrounding sexual diversity raised by the new legal climate created by the 2010 Equality Act.
