      What makes a good teacher?

This is one of the most common questions for teachers but the answers are rarely the same. Or are they? We asked some teachers at IATEFL in Cardiff what they thought. What do you think? Watch the video, and leave your comments below.

I think all of the opinions of the teachers in the video are right. A good teacher, as for me, should improve his/her teaching skills day by day in order to adapt new teaching methods.

A good teacher is he who can help students draw and discover their hidden source of positive energy on which they will lay foundation of their education. The purpose of education is to discover one's strength of self. A language teacher has to be imaginative and innovative to make ss not to feel bored, monotonous. A certain amount of dramatic quality stands good stead, though may not be effective always so far as language production is concerned. A good teacher should possess three Ps: purity, patience and perseverance. A teacher needs to ask innumearble questions in order to bring out the right answer; so he has to be a good listener, not to lose patience, under a somewhat tight schedule.

According to me A True Teacher is the one who come down to the level of the learner to teach. No doubt the command on his/her subject is must but at the same time he/she must keep this in mind that one should try to go beyond the books also and must provide them with true, experienced and live examples which the learner will surely understand. And there is no harm in giving knowledge of other subjects in your examples. Until and unless you cant love the child from within or take him as your own child you can never be a true teacher. Because I believe teaching comes from within.

Because I have over 200 children and I love them all. When you love them, are comfortable with them then only a true teaching can take place.

A good teacher is someone who is able to relate to his/her students.  He/She should be able to understand the needs of his/her students and should be adequately equipped to impart his/her knowledge and experience with passion.

A good teacher never stops teaching.  He/She is a teacher for life.

A good eacher is also a student for life, one who will continue to seek out new methods and techniques to impart his/her knowledge to his/her students.

      Hi everybody,

In my opinion, a good English Language Teacher is someone who cares shares & dares. Someone who cares about his/her own students and tries to give them everything new in English language, someone who shares his/her own ELT teaching experiences with his/her colleagues and tries to cope with all new findings in ELT world, someone who dares to teach English language effectively & efficiently.

      CARE, SHARE, DARE

      Have a nice time

I think a good teacher must establish good rapport with her/his students. This creates an amicable atmosphere so that pupils are free to ask queries and also discuss things. A teacher is a friend, parent and guide all rolled in one.

I would say that a good teacher needs to be passionate about his/her tasks ahead.

You need to understand the needs of your students, how they learn in order to help them in that process. You need trigger their curiosity and provide them with the necessary tools to continue learning.

      Hello everyone.

I think a good teacher is someone who is able to understand his students' abilities and needs to learn. Then promotes and develops their language learning. Also I must refer to the importance of being able to build a kind of confidence between the teacher and the learner, this would facilitate the learning-teaching process.

A good teacher, in my opinion, is the one who shows friendship and share confidence. The students must feel comfortable with whom they are learning a new language. The role of a teacher includes being a friend, a psychologist, a supportive person that encoreages them to learn and make them sure that they are able to succeed. After almost 12 years I think I have got great results.

      Best regards,

      Karla

p.s. the video still doesn't work.

      What makes a good Teacher?

Well there are many aspects and most seem to be related to personality traits such as being enigmatic, being interesting and so on. I feel there are also many skills that make a good teacher, an understanding of pedagogy and methodology of the subject in question for example, but one area that is often not taught, in CELTA, TEFL programmes is meeting students expectations in the modern world.

Students are Digital Natives, they use, the internet for chatting, meeting, discussions, making friends, studying and much more. We should be offering them a learning experience that meets their expectations of the modern world.

Our teaching should be relevant to students, making use of technologies in the classroom, such as PCs and projectors, interactive whiteboards and so on, lack of equipment in a classroom does not restrict making classes relevant, setting homework that is doen on the web is possible, students can work collaboratively on projects online using tools such as Skype, facebook etc and bring the results to class to print off. There are many ways to teach online without doing so in the classroom.

Using Technology is just one aspect of being a good teacher, and not more or less important than other replies in this thread, but it is one that is becoming more and more relvant, and we need to learn these skills ourselves if we are to continue to be professionals and good teachers.

      Dear All,

In our view, a good teacher is supposed to be passionate about teaching. He/she interacts with his/her students with respect, being able to establish a friendly rapport, being attentive to the students' needs and interests.

A good teacher should also praise his/her students for their accomplishments, making them aware of their progress, and helping them overcome their weakest learning points.

Given today's fast tech innovations, the teacher has to keep abreast of the so-called 21st century skills to be able to continue a good teacher/professional, guiding his/her students through a creative, responsible way.

      Cheers,

      Maria

      Dear K. Rajalakshm

You are right when you mention "teacher's knowledge" and "the ability to control the classroom".

If you allow me, I would like to emphasize that "teacher's knowledge" should also incorporate a certain degree of knowledge h/she has been able to collect from his/her students. Firstly, getting to know their profile, character, personal interests in life and studying.  Then, teacher's daily devotion to the work and deep interest in teacher development will certainly lead to that ability to control the classroom.

      Good luck!

      Maria
