What makes a bad lesson?
Submitted by Anonymous on 8 November, 2011 - 14:34
Is a bad lesson a result of it being 'just one of those days'? Or are there other factors to consider? Watch the answers we got to this question at IATEFL 2011, and leave your own answers below.

Bad lessons can be as a result of teachers being ill-prepared and not able to adapt to the needs of the students.
That's right. Thanks.
Ihis may be due to a/some problem(s) at Planning/Preparation/Presentation stage.Motivation level of the teacher is a common factor to all these stages.Hence,students'passive participation will lead to a 'bad lesson'.

Bad lesson cana result of the students' giving up in learning English.
Some of my students find that it is impossible for them to learn English, since it is too difficult for them to follow the content of the course in school.
I think if the teacher doesn't prepare well.
Bad lessons may be the result of a combination of different factors such as lack of motivation, personal problems, lack of proper training in specific areas, lack of resources, undefined objectives, etc. To avoid this situation, a teacher should consider asking for help to someone with experience in teaching to evaluate lessons.
Failing to create the right atmosphere for your lesson;
Bad prepared teachers;
Demotivated students;
Demotivated teachers etc.
-bad lesson plan -the teacher is not knowledgable about what he is going to teach.
bad lesson is a very subjective thing! sometimes it may seem "bad" for you, but perfect for the students or vice versa. but a really bad lesson is the one after which your students left without anything knew in their heads.
There are several factors that contribute to making a lesson bad.
a. inadequate preparation
b. abasence of the knowledge required for teaching the lesson - e.g. an unfamiliar themes/concept as may be described in the lesson.
c. lack of participation from the students
d. lack of confidence (particularly for beginners and student teachers)
e. fear of being supervised or performance being assessed
These are some of the factors that contribute. There could be many more reasons too.
Hi
We need to distinguish between lesson and session. A session can go bad, not a lesson. We / they may 'miss' a lesson, however and whenever we are able to get it, it is always good..
Why can a session go bad?
- Timing: Learner not ready yet in general ot today in paritcular to receive. I know from my experience, all good teachers try and give their best. (Those who dont, do not visit this kind of pages anyway)
- 'Green' Teacher: As they call in sales, a green fellow has to keep going; so that he overcomes his weaknesses.. Society will keep requiring younger teachers. So from a bad session, if s/ehe is getting some lesson, is there any harm?
- Factors: I read in some book - 'God, give me strength to change what can be changed, and let go what cannt be, and ability to distinguish between them...' A session can go bad because of many factors like lack of coordination (no good whiteboard marker in classroom) or when the Principal wnat you to be 'disciplinarian' or strict like Hitler.. not allowing you to take the sesion in your style...
Best wishes..Arvindis a result of unprepared attitude towards profession, taking the things so lightly
I read your comment. It's a spesific view. It's also interesting. I couldn't think this side. thanks.
I think the theme chosen with a certain level of learners .I mean if it is higher than their level they feal bored with the lesson.
Unprepared teacher, lack of mastery on subject, above the level of learners, no-involvement of learners, use of old typical methods, one-side teaching, behaviourism, lack of diversities and lack of varities in activities make a lesson bad.
Some teachers forget that pupils are very individual and so its not easy to motivate them in one way..
teachers come with no purpose. they don't know what the students will learn
Violetelizabeth shared her views. That's right. Also there more reasons. For example:
a)room conditions(physical)
b)students behaviors
c)uninterest (boring) subjects
d)unplanned start
etc. I can count more.
The teacher's best performance is the best lesson...
This video is so interesting, because it shows us some opinions about things teachers cannot realize when they are in class. And then we start to think about on how to keep organized all materials and the classroom during a lesson. it involves also classroom management and other situations in class that teacher can solve perfectly. It's normal that sometimes we have problems, but let us to consider our great necessity to be fine, planning, studying and searching for new Thanks for sharing it!
Actually the more you are well prepared the more the lesson appears good.
there are no such bad lessons only bad with teaching methodology.
once a teacher uses poor strategy, the lesson will be down.
