I agree that motivation is an important factor not only in language learning but in all life activities. I think that motivation depends on the interests and personalities of learners. It took different shapes and styles and so does motivation. What works here might not work there.
Dear All
Thanks, Robert, for reminding us of/ bringing to us all a flavour of IATEFL 2011.
All these colleagues have expressed something relevant in their viewpoints.
I would sum it up in my personal way:
* showing interest in what the students think and do
* getting enthusiastically involved in their activities
* letting them voice their opinions
* discussing real life issues/ contemporary ones
*praising their progress, and also making them realize how important it is learning from mistakes
* making it all fun and respectful simultaneously
All the best,
Maria
I agree with all the speakers -motivation can comes from making the material interestin, listening to the students respecting them and their opinions, even if you don't agree with them. I also think that by taking small steps- especially with weaker students, they realize that they can succeed- and that is a great motivating factor.

I really aggree that a teacher should motivate the students continuously. How would any students be led by the teacher? The teacher should be friendly and helpful.
i agree with you but what make the motivation is the reinforcement .then, we have to focuse upon internal and external reinforcements
Dear Mohanna,
Thanks for your opinion. What do you exactly mean by "the reinforcement" that makes motivation? Do you mean ongoing practice of contents as they are being taught/learnt? Do you mean something new you bring to the classroom and makes your learners more enthusiastic?
Looking forward to your examples.
Maria
shifting from teacher's-centered approach to learner's- centered apprach makes real motivation. In other words, students should be encouraged to be good speakers, Whilest, teachers should be directed to be good listeners.
I personally think that the best way to motivate students is to share their ideas and give them the opportunity to show what they think, this can give them chance to express what is in their mind and be familiar with themselves
