Choosing a coursebook is one of the most important selections which teachers can make. You cannot choose your teaching hours, your holiday periods, the classes you teach, the learners who are in those classes, or the classrooms you use, but you can choose your coursebook.
Dealing with Noisy Teens
Have you ever asked yourself why your students are so noisy?
- Maybe the subject isn't captivating enough?
- Possibly pictures of Big Ben feel too distant from their own world?
- Perhaps they lack courage to speak in English?
- Or maybe the presentation is too predictable?
Here are four activities to motivate your students and make them less noisy.
Memory techniques
'All learning depends on memory - without it everything would be new and unknown everyday.' 'You have more brain cells in your head than the number of trees in the Amazon rainforest. You have more connections between brain cells than the number of leaves on all the trees in the Amazon rainforest.' Learn strategies to remember.
Praise and criticism
Praise and criticism are two forms of feedback which we give to our students. This feedback not only contains advice but also carries a very strong emotional message. Learners receive praise and criticism in different ways according to their maturity. Young children need vast quantities of praise and find it difficult to accept criticism.
Three ways to correct students' speaking
The constant dilemma: to correct and encourage accuracy or not to correct and encourage fluency. Interrupting your students when they make mistakes risks making them nervous and hesitant speakers. Not doing so may deprive them of a valuable learning opportunity. The techniques may be used for both immediate and delayed correction.
