The fog that day had had a very good time indeed. Sometimes the fog was a little disappointed with its activities, and it just sat there on the water or on the land and didn’t do much apart from make people feel a bit more miserable. That day, however, had been splendid for soon after settling on the top of the waves and taking the sparkle off the sea and turn the colour grey it discovered a whole crew of ghosts. The ghosts, it has to be said, had been waiting for sometime for the fog to settle just where they wanted. Ghosts have a bit of a problem getting around in the broad daylight and even if they did manage to ignore the itchy feeling they got when they came into contact with the sun’s rays the fact that very few people could see them in the light made it all a bit pointless. If you couldn’t scare anyone, what was the point of it all anyway?
Both the fog and the ghosts, therefore, were pretty pleased at finding each other and soon settled into the kind of conversations that ghosts and fog at sea have from time to time. What they said isn’t recorded anywhere, and even if it was it is unlikely that you or I would understand it. Nevertheless, after a while the fog started to move in a particular direction and was quite persistent in following this direction, even when a little wind got up and tried to stop it. It was as if it knew where it was going, and wind or no wind, it was going to get there. The wind soon gave up, and decided to go further north and bother the people who lived on the Azores instead.
After a while the fog stopped moving, and settled its skirts on the sea and both the fog and the ghosts waited a while, amusing themselves by seeing how many sharks they could assemble in one place without them attacking each other.
The pirate ship came into the fog bank and instantly all the wind went out of its sails and the ship slowly drifted to a near standstill. What happened next is a story already told, but what happened after that is a story yet to be written. The fog drifted off, happy with the day’s work, but wondered if the ghosts stayed on the ship and wondered what happened to the rest of the crew and wondered if the sharks got stomach ache from eating the pirate captain.
Perhaps you know what happened next.
