      The STEP Project, Mozambique

      The British Council, in partnership with the Mozambique Ministry of Education and the University of London, managed a major 5-year British Government-funded project to improve the quality of English Language teaching in Mozambican schools.

      The English Examination Project, Russia

      During the first phase of this project, as a result of a joint initiative of the St Petersburg City Department of Education and the British Council, a new model of school leaving exam for English was established in St Petersburg.

      The Continuing Professional Development Project, Nigeria

      Upgrading the skills of English language teachers in Nigeria is one of the top priorities of the Federal Government. The British Council was ready and able to respond to this need.

      The Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) Project, Latvia

      The Ministry had just introduced English at primary level and wished to make sure its cadre of teachers throughout the country were brought up-to-date with the latest ideas in teaching young learners.

      Skills Through English for Public Servants (STEPS), Sri Lanka

      The British Council was asked by the German Development Agency GTZ to assist with English language and communications improvement courses.

      Bilingual Schools Project, Spain

      A major innovation is taking place in Spanish state schools. Bilingual education is taking the country by storm, and improving the English language ability of many students.

      The Pre-Service Teacher Training (PRESETT) Partnership Project 2002-06, Latvia

      The Latvian Ministry of Education wished to improve the quality of pre-service teacher education across Latvia, and asked the British Council for help.

      The Public Administration Communication Skills Project, Cyprus

      The British High Commission Nicosia has supported a number of projects designed to modernise the civil service in North Cyprus through the application of modern strategic planning, recruitment and management techniques.

      The Primary ELT Materials Project, Macedonia

      The Bureau for Development of Education (Ministry of Education) in Macedonia required support in the training of a team of 20 teachers of English in designing materials for teaching young learners that would be implemented in grade one in the state primary schools.

      The English for Teaching, Teaching for English (ETTE) Project, Bangladesh

      After conducting a needs assessment consisting of questionnaires, lesson observations, teacher focus groups and consultation with leading Bangladesh academics, the ETTE project decided to focus on primary school teachers working pre-dominantly in the rural sector.
