ESP SIG and TESOL ESP IS online discussion

TESOL ESP IS and IATEFL ESP SIG would like to invite ELT professionals from around the work to embark on a first joint online discussion titled English for Specific Purposes (ESP) around the world in academic and occupational contexts. In order to register and participate, please visit the TESOL Community site here. This online discussion will launch 1 February 2012. Our purpose is to look at English for Specific Purposes (ESP) from a variety of perspectives – personal and professional. We will tell our own stories as well as the stories of others we know, learn from our similarities and differences, and share resources. We will also exchange views, explore concepts, ask and answer each others’ questions and so much more. We look forward to hearing your academic and occupational ESP stories from 1 - 29 February 2012 as we create this memorable conversation about ESP together.

Mark Krzanowski (IATEFL ESP SIG Co-ordinator) & Kevin Knight (Chair, TESOL ESP IS (2011-2012))

      Hello, all

First of all, thank you for choosing this vital topic for discussion. Fortunately, this is my area of specialization where I teach business English at university.

I think the best book witten on ESP is by Tom Hutchinson and Alan Waters, titled English for Specific Purposes, A learning-centred approach.

The most important point is that the main concern in  ESP is with the needs of particular learners. In other words need analysis is the most characteristic feature of ESP.

      Hi

This is Nreen Mirza from Islamabad Pakistan, I teach at a local university and conduct customosed training programs. ESP has been my field since the last 10 years + now. I keep on learning m to know more grows. ore and my hunger.

I feel need analysis specially Target situation analysis is the most challenging but is also at the heart of a teaching program.

      What do you think?

Hello, I'm the director of a new, small language school in Mexico. We're slowly expanding and have just gotten contracts by two different companies to teach Business English.  Both companies export food products - one vegetables from giant greenhouses and the other local honey.

This is the first time we're doing this and I'd love any advice on texts - beginner - advanced, good websites with free business English lesson plans and/or ideas and any other things those of you with experience can share.

One specific question I have now is how do you suggest starting out with the beginners? I have my own ideas but would love to hear suggestions.

      Thanks so much!
