      Getting to know new coursebooks

I find it is always worth taking time to explore a new coursebook when we start working with it so I sometimes take a whole class to do this and prepare a variety of activities for my learners including quizzes and mini-presentations on features of the new material.

      Integrating homework and class work

Homework setting sometimes becomes an automatic reflex in my classes and its fit with my lessons and syllabus is dubious.

      Preventing learners use of L1

When all my learners speak the same L1 and I speak the language too then I believe that it has a role to play in classes, but I am very careful with how big a role this is.

      Making time for new words

When we are working with a text that has a lot of new words, like many teachers I try to limit the number to discuss with my learners, as too many can be counter-productive.

      Lesson menus

I always put a menu on the board before my classes. This describes the main stages of the lesson and the focus of each, and gives page numbers and details of homework.

      Reading out loud

When I work on reading aloud with learners, I always try to do two things.

      Publishing student writing

Sometimes my learners get really inspired by writing tasks and produce work where they really want to communicate something, so it seems natural to respect this and to give them a wider audience.

      Personalising example sentences

I often ask learners to write example sentences using new vocabulary.

      Powerpoint for teachers

This is something I've already blogged about - if you have the right facilities in your classroom, powerpoint can be a very useful addition to your teaching toolkit.

If you're interested in some of the techniques mentioned here, there's another video that explains how to create the 'word bank':  http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/blogs/rob-lewis/powerpoint-teachers-part-2

Do you think about colours, fonts and grouping when you use a board or prepare a presentation? Watch and listen to Tony's ideas and leave your comments below.
