I teach small groups of kindergarten children. When I take the register and call out a student's name, I ask the student to sing a little song they know in their own language or in English before moving on to the next student.

For older students I might show a picture on the board and get them each to ask a question, or I might ask them to tell me something about themselves or their day e.g. what they had for breakfast, their favourite colour or what animal they like best.
